Soul's Remnant MMO: Is It Worth Playing? Full Review
Soul's Remnant MMO review: a 2D platformer MMORPG by Chaomoon with classless builds, a player economy, guilds, co-op dungeons and a cosmetics-only cash shop.

Yes, Soul's Remnant is a real MMORPG: a free-to-play 2D platformer MMO by indie developer Chaomoon, inspired by classic MapleStory, Ragnarok Online, and Mabinogi. It launched in Steam Early Access on August 13, 2026 after roughly ten years of development, and launch-week reviews were strikingly positive. This overview explains what kind of MMO it is, how its systems work, and who it is for.
What kind of MMO is it?
Soul's Remnant is a 2D sidescrolling MMORPG with pixel art, built to recapture the old-school MMO feeling where community and social gameplay were everything. The developer grew up on classic MapleStory and Mabinogi and says the goal was to bring back the best of those while adding a twist. It is free-to-play, runs on one shared server for every region, and pushes players toward grouping — parties, guilds, friend lists, and a channel system are all core features, while solo play and ironman modes remain fully viable.
The classless system
There are no classes. Anyone can use any equipment and any skill, and you mix the melee, ranged, magic, and faith skill lines freely. Each time you level up you get 5 attribute points and 2 skill points. Skills level individually by use — using skills in a line levels that line and unlocks more powerful skills further down — and skills can be dropped into a macro that fires them back-to-back from one button. The launch-week meta settled on builds like crit archer, pure mage, paladin, faith support, and magic blade, all flexible combinations rather than fixed classes.
Numbers and scope
From the Steam store page, the current Early Access build includes:
- 72+ skills across combat and life disciplines
- Over 1,000 items, including nearly 200 weapons
- 700+ crafting recipes and a crafting minigame
- Life skills: fishing, mining, herbalism, and gathering minigames
- Nearly 100 monsters and 19 bosses, plus 3 unique dungeons
- 200+ maps across multiple biomes and 150+ quests
- 6 core stats (STR/DEX/INT/SPR/CON/LUK) and 10 villager NPCs to befriend
Player-driven economy and progression
The economy is almost entirely player-driven: an auction house and player shop stalls let crafters sell to each other, and specializing in a profession is a legitimate business — the most active weapon merchant in the community reportedly ignored combat almost entirely. Gearing is RNG-based with tools to manipulate stat lines, and endgame builds are considered obtainable with time investment. Life skills also give combat stats, so they are worth leveling, not just for money.
Is it worth playing?
Launch-week players called it "the most fun MMO I've played this year," and the r/MMORPG announcement thread was unusually positive. The honest caveats: it is fundamentally a grindy game with little story or voice acting, the difficulty can spike sharply at new areas, and some players find the mid-game becomes a grind wall around level 40. It is free and runs on low-end hardware (2 GB RAM, 400 MB storage), so the cost of trying it is just time. If you loved pre-Big-Bang MapleStory grinding with friends, this is aimed directly at you.
