Soul's Remnant Skills — Combat Categories, Buffs & Macros

How skills work in Soul's Remnant: Melee, Range, Magic and Faith categories, skill leveling by use, basic attacks, buffs, macros and loadouts.

Updated Aug 15, 2026

Skills are a core part of Soul's Remnant, allowing you to perform special feats in combat that both reflect and dictate your attribute distribution and equipment loadout. There is more to personal expression than just equipment, after all.

Combat categories

Skills belong to one of four categories — Melee, Range, Magic and Faith — and each category benefits from its own type of Attack Speed. The Combat Categories table is the best way to see which skills scale from what:

Skills can scale from a damage type they do not belong to. For example, Onslaught is a skill that scales from all four types, yet it is classified as only Melee — so its cooldown is only affected by Melee Attack Speed and Global Attack Speed. You can find skill categories in-game via the Learned Skills tab of your Skills Window [K].

Skills level by use

Each skill levels individually by use, and needs monster-dropped essences to upgrade. This is why every build guide says the same thing: pick two or three skills you will actually use and feed them. A level 30 skill is dramatically stronger than a level 5 one.

Basic attacks

Basic Attacks uniquely do not interrupt other non-Basic Attack skills, letting you weave between skills more efficiently than any other skill type. Very often a Basic Attack's animation plays out in full while another skill comes out at the same time.

Basic Attacks also have the unique property of providing Perks while active — not only do they function like other skills (increasing effectiveness as their skill level rises), but reaching certain thresholds gives a stat bonus. Each Basic Attack provides its own type of stat boost, and deactivating it removes those Perks. Examples:

Buffs

Buffs are extremely powerful in Soul's Remnant, coming in a wide variety of flavors that increase the power of your skills multiplicatively. Many buffs already have a cooldown of one second and/or function as a toggle. Note that Blue Moon in particular cannot have its cooldown lowered by Attack Speed, as stated in its own description.

Passives

Combat passives and perks exist for every category: Melee (Passive), Range (Passive), Magic (Passive) and Faith (Passive). Leveling the matching basic attack unlocks and powers these passive stat lines.

Macros

The macro system lets you chain a sequence of skills to one button — launch-week players use it to condense rotations like the archer's throw sequence into a single keypress once their rotation settles.

Loadouts

Loadouts save up to three things: your current equipment, your current active skills, and your current Macros setup. Swapping Loadouts requires a certain amount of Soul Crystal, so it pays to design them carefully.
