Soul's Remnant Calamity Gem: Risks, Outcomes & How to Use

What the Soul's Remnant Calamity Gem does and how to use it: how gems upgrade gear, possible outcomes, and the risk of destroying your item.

Updated Aug 19, 2026

The Calamity Gem is the high-risk upgrade option in Soul's Remnant's gem system: it can destroy your item, but when it does not, it can strengthen, randomize, lock, or even add upgrade slots to your gear. Gems have a low chance to drop from any monster. This guide explains how gems work, every outcome the official wiki lists for the Calamity Gem, and the one-line upgrade trick players use early.

How gems work

Gems are one of the ways to improve equipment in Soul's Remnant, increasing what a line provides independent of line quality. Using a gem destroys the gem, removes one Upgrade Slot from the piece of equipment, applies its effect, and adds (+1) to the item's name — you also get a message telling you what was upgraded and by how much. To use one, open your inventory and drag the gem over the equipment you want to upgrade. Left-click drag uses a single gem; right-clicking the gem lets you chain multiple gems by clicking the item repeatedly, and right-click again stops.

The three gem types

Every possible Calamity Gem outcome

The official wiki lists what can happen when a Calamity Gem succeeds, and the range is wide:

There are no published probabilities for any of these outcomes, so treat the Calamity Gem as a gamble, not a strategy.

The One Line Upgrade Trick

A popular early-game method for getting the most out of both gems and souls: find a good item with a good first Echoes line, and do not spend souls on it yet. Use Mystic Gems right away to guarantee all your Upgrade Slots go directly into that first Echoes line. Once you have a steady supply of souls, it is better to hold off on gems until you have multiple Echoes lines you like — any +1s you add stay in their position even while rerolling, so you do not want to upgrade Echoes before you finish rolling them. For items with only one possible Stats line, the same trick works with Nurturing Gems.

Where to get gems

Gems have a low chance to drop from any monster, and the wiki notes they can also be obtained through normal gameplay progression. The Mysterious Man at Spawn and dungeon vendors deal in Dungeon Essence, so if gems become exchangeable there, the official wiki's Gems page would be the place to confirm — treat specific vendor options as to-verify.
